And each fall, a thousand scholars and young faculty members convene to learn and support one another at the Institute on Teaching and Mentoring. The goal of the Doctoral Scholars Program is to increase the number of minority students who earn doctorates and choose to become faculty at colleges and universities.

Twenty-five years ago, the South was graduating so few Ph. students of color that, in some fields, the annual number of graduates could fit into the same car.
